Ken O’Connor

Ken O’Connor is an independent consultant who specializes in issues relating to communicating student achievement, specifically grading and reporting. He is a strong advocate for standards-based curriculum, teaching, assessment, grading and reporting.

A graduate of the University of Melbourne (B.A. Hon) and the University of Toronto (M. Ed), he has been a staff development presenter and facilitator in in 37 countries outside North America, 47 states in the USA, and 10 provinces and two territories in Canada. 

His twenty-three year teaching career included experience as a geography teacher and department head at 6 schools in Toronto and Melbourne (Grades 7-12) starting in 1967. 

He is the author of  A Repair Kit for Grading: 15 Fixes for Broken Grades. Third Edition,and How to Grade for Learning: Linking Grades to Standards.

Josh Ogilvie

Josh Ogilvie is a teacher, speaker, and lifelong learner with a passion for standards-based assessment and grading that empowers students and supports whole-child development.

With more than 20 years in education, he has served as a teacher, department chair, district leader, university instructor, and curriculum developer.

He has helped teachers and districts across North America shift their assessment and grading practices to a standards-based approach, bringing dynamic energy, along with empathy and understanding of the complexities educators face.

Josh creates engaging, practical learning experiences that strengthen teacher practice and enhance student learning. He has particular expertise in helping PE teachers and departments successfully shift their practices to a standards-based approach. 

Dr. Matt Townsley

An associate professor of educational leadership at the University of Northern Iowa, Dr. Matt Townsley is considered one of the nation’s leading experts on leadership for standards-based grading.

Matt has authored over 30 articles and books including Making Grades Matter: Standards-Based Grading in a Secondary PLC at Work , Using Grading to Support Student Learning, A Parents’ Guide to Grading and Reporting: Being Clear about What Matters, and Extinguishing the Fires within Assessment and Grading Reform.

As a former district administrator and teacher in the Solon Community School District (Solon, IA), he has firsthand experience implementing and leading lasting grading reform.

District Administration magazine named Solon Community Schools a district of distinction, and Solution Tree recognized multiple buildings in the district as model professional learning communities during his tenure.

Through conferences, professional development and workshops, Dr. Townsley has supported teachers, administrators, school boards, and parents across the globe on the topics of assessment and grading, earning him the moniker, “The Sportscaster of Alternative Grading.”

Dr. Lee Ann Jung

Dr. Lee Ann Jung is founder of Lead Inclusion and Professor of Practice at San Diego State University. Her career-long focus on assessment began in the 1990s with research on measuring progress toward special education goals. Since then, she has become a leading voice in advancing equitable and meaningful assessment, partnering with schools around the world to design systems that reflect growth and promote independence.

She is the author of ten books and dozens of articles on assessment and inclusive education, including the bestselling Assessing Young Children. Her most recent book, Assessing Students, Not Standards, challenges the field to move beyond two decades of standards-based grading toward next-generation assessment practices. She also authored one of the few texts dedicated to grading students with learning differences, now under contract for an updated edition.

Lee Ann served as Chair of the Classroom Assessment Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association (2016–2017). A former special education teacher, administrator, and researcher, she brings deep expertise in translating research into sustainable practice, having worked with public and independent schools in more than 35 countries.

Greg Mullen

Greg Mullen is a K–12 classroom teacher in California with a Master of Science in Teaching and Leadership from the University of North Dakota, specializing in Mastery Learning and Instructional Coaching. He is the founder of Exploring the Core LLC, an organization dedicated to advancing self-directed learning and instructional innovation; author of Creating a Self-Directed Learning Environment (Corwin, 2019); and an independent researcher focused on the intersection of human development and organizational culture in educational settings. He is currently an elementary classroom teacher in Los Angeles CA putting his principles and practices into action. Greg is your go to person for assistance in change management focused around standards based and competency based education.
